Sidney Lumet (1924-2011) is not a household name, but he should be. Over a fifty-year career, Lumet helmed some of the greatest movies ever made. He had a fondness for outsiders and cynics who seek the truth at any cost. Lumet’s films find humanity in the contradictions between opposing forces: toughness and sentimentality, tragedy and comedy, the past and the future. Many of his thematic topics - the vapid nature of celebrity culture, the exploitation of the media by bad actors, the fallibility of the criminal justice system - take on an eerie relevence in 2026. This class explores six of the director’s most important movies.

Whereaver possible, films will be screened in person prior to the discussion. We will gather on Zoom every second Wednesday for lively discussion.

Offered on Zoom direct from New York City by Jordan Osterer who has an MA in Film from Columbia University, and a BA with a minor in Jewish Canadian Studies from the University of Ottawa.

Every second Wednesdays at 3:00 pm,

July 15 - Sept 30, 2026

cost: $60.00 for all 6 sessions

Enrollment is limited to 18.
