Creative Connections is an exciting, unique, weekly Jewish all day social and recreational program geared to cognitively well, ‘older’ seniors. The next session runs January 9-March 13, 2018.
Creative Connections offers a variety of workshops, informative lectures, gentle exercise classes and an engaging music program led by instructors and program leaders. Many of the program ideas are generated from the members themselves and on occasion, members are encouraged to take the lead on programs in areas of their interest or expertise.
Creative Connections is the only day out program in Ottawa with consistent Jewish content; Jewish holidays are celebrated, Jewish learning takes place with invited scholars as presenters, and Jewish film and music are integral parts of the programming.
The program runs on Tuesdays from 9:30am-2:15pm at the Soloway Jewish Community Centre in 3 sessions throughout the year: Fall, Winter and Spring.
Participants register for the full 10 weeks of each session. Creative Connections is not a drop-in program; registration is required at the beginning of each ten-week session.
Fresh fruit, snacks and coffee, tea and juice are available in the morning upon arrival and throughout the day. Participants bring their own lunch or order a lunch from the on-site café.
Creative Connections offers a social and communal atmosphere for Jewish seniors to make new friendships and maintain personal connections with others through shared interests and learning. New participants are warmly welcomed and participants often remain part of the group for many years.
Creative Connections is a joint program between AJA 50+ and the Soloway Jewish Community Centre. Membership in AJA 50+ or the SJCC is required to register for Creative Connections.
Membership with AJA 50+ is $36 a year (Sept-Aug).
Participants need to be fairly physically independent. Due to space limitations and the social nature of this program, caregivers are not permitted in the program.
While some members provide their own transportation, others require assistance in making arrangements. Many participants make use of the services of Para Transpo; others are driven by volunteer drivers or a taxi service, depending on the circumstances. Cost to the participant is relatively the same regardless of the mode of transportation the participant uses.
$50 for a 10 week session
$5-$10 a week for onsite prepared lunches (optional)
$50 transportation costs per session for those requiring transportation assistance
Financial assistance is available as needed. Contact Annette Paquin email@example.com to discuss individual needs in private.
Creative Connections receives funding from participant fees, the Jewish Federation of Ottawa and United Way of Ottawa with some additional program subsidies from local arts organizations such as MASC and the National Arts Centre Orchestra.
