C119 Jewish Film Series
Movies reflect the cultural, political, and social concerns of their era. As the medium of film evolves and changes, what kinds of Jewish stories are we seeing onscreen? How do these movies explore classic Jewish anxieties including antisemitism, assimilation, and the divide between tradition and modernity? Every class in this 6-session series will feature a film from a different decade, beginning in the 1960s and ending in the 2010s. We will examine a wide range of Jewish titles from Academy Award contenders to smaller independent fare, from documentaries to experimental films. Rather than focusing on the major names of Jewish cinema (Mel Brooks, Steven Spielberg, Barbra Streisand), we will look at several lesser-known or underseen works, including two Canadian titles. Some of these movies are funny, others are heartbreaking, and a few of them are even a little scary. Each is sure to prompt a lively discussion.
Offered on Zoom direct from New York City by Jordan Osterer who has an MA in Film from Columbia University, and a BA with a minor in Jewish Canadian Studies from the University of Ottawa.
Every second Wednesday at 3:00 pm from March 5 until May 7
