B115 The Wayne & Shuster Comedy Hour with Nathan Greenfield
"The Wayne & Shuster Comedy Hour" was the most popular show in Canada for decades. Its stars, Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster, were also Canada's biggest stars in the United States, appearing on Ed Sullivan 67 times, more than twice the next most popular act. Their humor, dubbed "literate slapstick," drew on their University of Toronto BAs in English Literature and, to a degree not recognized, their humor is deeply rooted in their shared Jewish culture. At U of T, in the Army Show, on radio and then on television, their learning and Yiddishkeit was never far from the surface and, at times, right out in front.
Join Nathan M. Greenfield for this fascinating and interesting retrospective. Nathan is the author of seven military histories, a dual biography of the Canadian painters Molly and Bruno Bobak; his most recent book, Hanged in Medicine Hat: Murders in a Nazi Prisoner of War Camp, and the Disturbing True Story of Canada's Last Mass Execution, published in 2022. He is the North American Correspondent for the University World News.
